The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien Revised Edition Hardcover Set 3 Volumes

This is a 3-volume hardcover set of J. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. It is a book club edition of the revised American edition, published in the late 1980s. (1) The first volume is "The Fellowship of the Ring, " which includes a "Note on the Text" by Douglas A.

Anderson (author of "The Annotated Hobbit") who writes that this revised edition is the most faithful to the author's intent. This is the most near-to-perfect text of'The Lord of the Rings' ever to appear in print. The set includes corrections that J. Tolkien wanted (many errors had been added to his text by well-meaning editors) and, after his death in 1973, the corrections desired by his literary executor (and son) Christopher Tolkien.

The first volume includes J. Tolkien's "Foreword to the Second Edition" which he prepared in the 1960s, a Prologue, and a fold-out map created by the author. The first volume is 423 pages in length.

(2) The second volume is The Two Towers. It includes a synopsis of the first volume and a second fold-out map created by the author. The second volume is 352 pages in length. (3) The third volume is The Return of the King. It includes a synopsis of the first two volumes, a third fold-out map created by the author, and 6 appendices plus an index of names (the appendices and index run to 127 pages in length).

The appendices contain a great deal of information that assists readers with understanding the backstories relevant to "The Lord of the Rings" as well as the languages of Middle Earth. There is also an appendix which operates as a pronunciation guide (which many readers will appreciate). The third volume is 440 pages in length. This set, with its revised and faithful text and many other features, is a tour de force edition of The Lord of the Rings. This item is in the category "Books & Magazines\Books".
